It's a tall order to buy a lunchtime pint and curry, let alone a good one. But Raj and his business partner Ray have been busy preparing the Safari Club, as part of the Swan and Pyramids pub in North Finchley, to do just that.

They have rejuvenated their second bar into a bar/restaurant, where there is seating for more than 60 customers, and plenty of tables and chairs to easily sit and have a lunchtime meal.

For £4.99, hungry punters can order a two-course set meal from Monday to Friday, between noon and 2.30pm. Take-away is also available.

They believe the key is presenting punters with good, home-style cooking with an Indian and African twist in a non-smoking family environment. The inside of the pub is particularly welcoming and the partners are planning on upgrading the facade in the near future, as well as constructing a rear conservatory.

A close look at the menu reveals words like Methi, Muttar and Jeera they are Indian names, and suggests there is an authenticity that is hopefully reflected in the taste. I sampled the Chicken Tikka for starters which was presented on a sizzling hot dish served with onion and tomato. The meat was so tender I mentioned it to Raj, who responded that it is marinated overnight with a blend of spices like chili powder, cumin, black pepper, coriander and more, which then seeps into the meat and adds to the overall taste when cooked. I opted for the Nairobi Chicken for my main, as I wanted to try the African spices. The chicken was more spicy with an explosion of taste that resonated in my mouth long after I had finished. Rice and a soft naan bread was served too.

The curries range from about £4 to £6 and even less for the vegetarian dishes, which are extensively listed on the menu for around £3.

Seafood, tandoori, goat, chicken and lamb curries make up the rest of the menu, with rice, naan breads and desserts following.

There are various African and Indian beers, as well as Bombay Pilsner a specially brewed Indian beer to be served alongside Indian food.

The Safari Club caters for private functions too. I left feeling there is much potential at the restaurant, so why not treat yourself and find out?
