    Mayor's year at final countdown

Look who's here: Esther Rantzen was the guest of honour at a celebration dinner for Maureen Braun, who hands over her mayoral chains in May

The Mayor of Barnet celebrated her year in office with a combination of wine and wellies this week.

Councillor Maureen Braun was joined by family, colleagues and guest of honour Esther Rantzen, at her finalé dinner at Hendon Hall Hotel on Sunday.

On Monday, she commemorated her time as first citizen of the borough by planting a London plane tree in Sunny Hill Park, Hendon, which joins an avenue of trees dedicated to past mayors.

Members of the Sunny Hill Neighbourhood Watch and residents' association joined Mrs Braun at the park to plant dwarf daffodils at the foot of the new tree.

Her year-long stint as mayor will officially come to an end on May 13, when Councillor John Marshall will be sworn in at Hendon Town Hall, in The Burroughs.

Mrs Braun is Barnet's 43rd mayor and has presided over civic events such as Veterans' Day and the Civic Awards, as well as meeting hundreds of residents.

"I have had a wonderful year as mayor and have met some fantastic people," she said.

"The recent Civic Awards ceremony made me realise just how many outstanding people live or work in the borough of Barnet.

"I am also delighted I have been able to help the North London Hospice, the wonderful organisation I chose as my official charity for my year in office."
