It's been two-and-a-half years in construction and eight years since it was just a glint in Barnet Council's eyes.

North Finchley's artsdepot, which boasts two theatres, a gallery space and plenty of public areas, has released its diverse and high-profile programme, which opens next next month.

An open day kicks off proceedings on Saturday, while two West End comedies, Stones in His Pockets (January 13-15) and The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) (October 28-29) will visit the venue as will acclaimed comedians Mark Thomas (November 16) and Al Murray, The Pub Landlord (December 3).

Alison Duthie, artistic director of the new centre based in Tally Ho, said: "We've worked to put together a programme that will appeal to a wide range of tastes across the borough, and the response so far has been great. We plan to continue to bring a host of exciting artists and performers to Barnet for the very first time over the coming months and years, and really put artsdepot on the map as a centre of cultural excellence."

Highlights include world-renowned flamenco act Paco Pea (October 30) and percussionist Evelyn Glennie (November 17).

Collaborating with Mercury Music Prize nominee MJ Cole, Glennie will mix beats with Cole's modern UK soul.

Glennie, one of artsdepot's many illustrious patrons, said: "I am delighted to be associated with one of the UK's most exciting arts developments. Artsdepot will benefit not just the local community in north London, but the entire arts community will reap the rewards that will be generated from a new nurturing ground for flourishing talent. I look forward to supporting and sharing in the development of this prestigious new venue."

Other artist patrons include actors Richard Wilson and Miranda Richardson and artist Anish Kapoor, as well as Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell.

While the likes of Pea, Glennie and reggae poet Benjamin Zephaniah (November 18), will satisfy the tastes of the more highbrow, there will be plenty of light-hearted acts.
