Jewish charity to help Burmese cyclone victims

An emergency appeal to help victims of the devastating cyclone in Burma has been launched by a Jewish charity based in Golders Green.

Tens of thousands of people are estimated to have been killed, and millions displaced, in the south-east Asian state, one of the world's poorest, after cyclone Nargis ripped through it on Saturday.

World Jewish Relief (WJR) hopes to mobilise the support of the Jewish community to channel relief funds to where they are needed most.

Paul Anticoni, chief executive of WJR, said: "The terrifying cyclone has left a trail of disaster in its wake and the scale of need is overwhelming."

He added that WJR would work to ensure the money raised would directly benefit those most affected.

    u To support WJR's Emergency Burma Appeal visit wjr.org.uk/burma or call 020 8736 1250.
