    Stepping down: councillor Monroe Palmer

The Barnet Liberal Democrat group have announced a new leader following councillor Monroe Palmer's decision to step down.

The Child's Hill ward councillor has been leader for 17 years and will be succeeded by his ward colleague councillor Jack Cohen.

Councillor Palmer, who was first elected to Barnet Council in 1986, said: "I think it is the right time to hand over the job to some one else.

"I intend to continue to play a full part on the council and I am looking forward to the local elections in 2010 when I intend campaign to be re-elected, and continue represent the people of Child's Hill."

He will now take up the role as the party's group whip.

Councillor Cohen paid tribute to his predecessor, and added that he is determined to challenge the Conservative administration.

He said: "Monroe has worked as hard as any one on the Council. He has set a standard that will be hard to beat.

"The Tory Council is becoming more and more remote from the people they are supposed to look after.

"The Liberal Democrats will fight to ensure residents views count."

Other appointments made at the Liberal Democrat councillors group meeting included Susette Palmer being named group secretary and deputy leader, and the role of group chair being handed to Jeremy Davies.
