    Returning to squash glory
Making a racket: Phil Power and Dave Sanders, from Potters Bar Squash Club, in action
Making a racket: Phil Power and Dave Sanders, from Potters Bar Squash Club, in action

Potters Bar Squash Club are beginning to relive the glory days.

The club, now part of DHC Potters Bar Health Club, in Mount Grace Road, are once again winning top honours in the world of squash.

From being one of the top clubs in the country in the 1980s, their prominence on the national squash circuit diminished significantly over the years.

But now the good days appear to be back. The club's first team won the Hertfordshire League this season, while the Vintage side (Over-50s) won the Middlesex County League.

The first team had a fantastic season and lost just one match, despite the fact that four regular players were missing.

The season culminated in a final title decider against Harpenden Squash Club at Mount Grace Road, which they won comfortably.

All of the team (Dave Sanders, Peter Newman, Tito Diaz, Phil Littlefair, Tom Kelly and Phil Power) put in consistently good performances over the season. Sanders, ex-county champion, deserves special recognition for a 100 per cent record in the league.

The Vintage side, represented by John Mack, Mike Thorpe, Evan Herbert and Dave Dawson, also had an outstanding campaign.

Playing in perhaps the strongest Vintage League in the country, and again losing just one match all season, they pipped hot favourites Uxbridge to the title.

Mack produced the performance of the season, when he beat current professional and former Vintage world champion Mo Kalifa in a titanic individual match. This double success clearly demonstrates the resurgence of squash at Potters Bar Health Club. Paul Carter, ex-British number one and current England national team coach, is based at the club and brings world-class professionals, such as Peter Nicol, Vicki Botwright, Peter Barker, Adrian Grant and Tania Bailey to the club for coaching sessions and exhibition matches.

Potters Bar Youth Squash is also thriving, with junior coaching sessions for six-14 year-olds on Sundays. For further details about junior or adult (14-plus) squash at Potters Bar, pop along to the club or phone 01707 651086.

The club are also looking for sponsorship for next season in a bid to improve their squad further and to fulfil the dream of moving on to a national league.
